If you are growing out short hair, “just tidy it up” can leave an important detail unsaid: which lengths are you trying to keep? For a consultation at HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER Taipei, bring a reference photo and separate what you want to keep from what is bothering you today. Work through the following three areas before deciding what to trim.
Check these three areas before the cut
1. Fringe and top: which lengths need to stay?
Point out where you want the fringe to fall in your reference photo and the length you want to keep on top. If your fringe is getting in your eyes, ask whether a different parting or styling direction could help first. If trimming is needed, ask where the hair will fall afterward. Mention any requirement to keep your eyes clear at work. One awkward section does not tell the barber what you want to keep elsewhere.
2. Sides: keep the ears clear, or grow the sides too?
These are different goals. If you are growing only the top, discuss how to tidy the outline around your ears. If you want the sides to fall naturally as they get longer, say that you do not want them automatically clipped back to their previous length. Point to any area that feels bulky, then ask what can be adjusted while keeping the length and fullness needed for your goal.
3. Nape: tidy the edges, or shorten the whole area?
Use a mirror to check the back together. An uneven edge, bulk at the back of the head and a nape you want to grow longer are different concerns. Ask what the outline would look like if only the edges were tidied. If you often wear collared shirts, describe how you would like the hair to sit in relation to your collar.
Copy this keep-or-trim consultation note
[Goal] What I like in the reference photo: ___
[Fringe / top] Lengths to keep: ___; hair affecting my vision: ___
[Sides] Keep the ears clear / grow the sides too / discuss first
[Nape] Length to keep: ___; edges or bulk I want tidied: ___
[Daily routine] Work requirements: ___; styling time: ___; products I use, if any: ___
[Before cutting] Which areas will we leave uncut today? Where will the trimmed sections fall afterward?
For example: “I want to grow my fringe and top, and I do not want the sides taken back to their old length. The bulk above my ears bothers me most today. Could we discuss what can be tidied first?” If you have not chosen a final style, compare two directions before agreeing on what to keep.
Leave with a routine for the length you have now
Ask for a demonstration of the parting, drying direction and amount of styling product that suit your current length. Say so if you do not normally use products. Growing your hair does not automatically mean you need a perm. If you are considering an extra service, confirm its suitability, what is included, the total price and the time required. A reference photo is a communication aid, not a promise of an identical result or a completion date.
