Want a new haircut but unsure which details in a reference photo matter? When discussing a men's haircut in Taipei, start with three decisions: how much forehead to show, how short to go at the sides, and how much time you want to spend styling each day. These three looks, photographed by HIRO GINZA, offer practical starting points for your consultation.
These are hairstyle reference photographs. Your cut and styling routine should be discussed according to your hair texture, growth direction and head shape.
1 | Keep a fringe: a softly rounded, textured short style

The fringe falls forward, the outline is rounded, and defined strands are visible on the surface. Use this example to explain that you want to keep a fringe without a heavy-looking finish.
You could say: “I want to keep my fringe. Can we check its length near my eyebrows and decide how much to leave around my ears?” If you wear glasses, put them on during the consultation so you can check how the fringe and sides sit.
The hair colour is only a visual reference. Cut, colour and styling are separate choices; you do not need the same colour to discuss this outline.
2 | Show some forehead: textured short hair with neat sides

This look shows the centre of the forehead while retaining some length at either side of the fringe. The hair around the ears is short, with upward-pointing texture on top. Compared with the first example, the difference in length between the sides and top is more noticeable.
Ask whether you would prefer a more distinct graduation at the sides or a softer transition. Tell your stylist whether you normally blow-dry your hair and whether daily styling product fits your routine. A finished photo does not mean the same result will appear after washing and air-drying alone.
3 | Lift the fringe: a forehead-showing short style

The lifted fringe exposes more of the forehead. Fine, separated strands are visible on top, with a short outline around the ears. It can be a useful reference if you want a clear view of your face or prefer to keep hair away from your eyes.
Instead of simply asking to “go short,” try: “I want to lift my fringe, keep the sides from looking bulky, and learn how to blow-dry it at home.” Growth direction and your current length affect what is practical, so decide after your stylist has looked at your hair.
Four things to discuss after choosing your photo
• Which part do you like: the fringe, the sides or the overall outline? You can discuss them separately.
• Does work or school have rules about colour or length?
• Do you wear glasses or a helmet? Which areas are hardest to style?
• What daily routine do you want? Ask for a demonstration of drying technique and how much styling product to use.
Will I need a perm to get the look?
A finished photograph cannot establish which services were used. Whether you need a perm depends on your natural growth pattern, length, intended result and styling habits. Bring your reference photo to the consultation. Before adding any service, confirm its content, duration and price.
