Style reference from our catalogue: loose-wave centre part. The method and finish for your own hair will be assessed during consultation.
What would you like your hair to do differently? Perhaps it falls flat at the front, feels too straight to style, or needs more movement through the top. A perm consultation can start with that everyday problem, rather than the name of a treatment.
At HIROGINZA PREMIUM BARBER SYDNEY DYMOCKS, we offer rod perms and Japanese iron perms. We discuss your preferred finish, current length, hair condition and styling routine before recommending an approach. The aim is a shape that suits how you want to wear your hair.
Start with the finish
Subtle movement for work, a flowing centre part, texture above a fade, soft waves or more defined curls: bring a reference photo and tell us what you like about it. You do not need to decide the technique before your consultation.
Rod perm or Japanese iron perm: what is the difference?
Rod perm: waves and curls through the hair
A rod perm shapes the hair around rods using a perming solution. Different winding patterns and rod sizes allow us to discuss softer movement or more visible curls. It is a starting point for loose waves, flowing centre parts and defined curl styles when the hair has suitable length.
Japanese iron perm: direction and shape for shorter hair
An iron perm uses a specialist heated iron together with a perming solution. It can help shape shorter hair, adding bend, lift or a more controlled direction. For some short styles, it is an option when the aim is easier shaping rather than an obvious curl. Suitability depends on your hair and chosen finish.
Five style directions to discuss
1. Natural business hair: subtle movement and a neat outline
If you wear a side part or a tidy swept-back style for work, explain how much movement you want to see. A gentle rod perm or a targeted iron perm may be a starting point, depending on length. Ask us to keep the result subtle if you want the change to feel understated.
2. Centre part or curtains: softer movement around the face
For a centre part that feels less rigid, discuss loose bends through the front and top. With suitable length, a loose rod perm may help create that flowing direction. Bring a photograph that shows the fringe and side profile as well as the front.
3. Short crop or fade: texture through the top
If you prefer shorter hair, ask about shaping the top while keeping the outline crisp. An iron perm may suit the brief where there is enough length to work with. The fade is created by the haircut; the perm changes the hair we leave on top.
4. Soft waves: a relaxed finish with visible movement
If you want movement you can see, without a tightly curled look, bring a soft-wave reference. A rod perm is a possible starting point. We can discuss how much wave you want, where it should sit and how you like to finish the hair at home.
5. Defined curls or a spiral-inspired style: a stronger change
For a more noticeable curl pattern, discuss a rod-perm design with us. Show the amount of curl and overall shape you want. We will also talk about the length needed and the styling routine involved before agreeing on the service.
What to bring to your consultation
- A reference photo: point out the movement, fringe or silhouette you like.
- Your usual routine: tell us whether you air-dry, use a dryer, or apply styling product.
- Your hair history: mention previous colour, bleach, straightening or perms.
- Your preference for the finish: discreet movement, loose waves or a visible curl.
We may suggest keeping more length, changing the design or waiting before a chemical service if that is more appropriate for your hair. The consultation helps us set a realistic plan.
Questions about men’s perms
Does a perm mean tight curls?
No. The consultation can be about a small amount of bend or direction, as well as a more visible curl. Tell us how noticeable you want the result to be.
Will I still need to style it?
Yes. A perm gives us a different base to work with; drying and finishing still affect the result. We will explain a routine for your chosen style before you leave.
How long does it last?
That varies with your hair, the design, growth and care. We will discuss maintenance for the look you choose rather than promise the same number of weeks for every guest.
What does it cost, and which appointment should I book?
Our current menu lists Signature Grooming + Perm from AUD 250, with a first-visit offer of AUD 220. Additional charges may apply depending on hair length or style. See the current menu and confirm the price and appointment time for your design before the service. Please choose a perm appointment rather than a haircut-only slot.
