A haircut can be a lively part of the day: a conversation with your barber, music playing, people coming and going. Some people enjoy that. Others arrive wanting a little quiet.
At HIROGINZA PREMIUM BARBER SYDNEY DYMOCKS, we have built our salon around the second experience. We are a Japanese barber in Sydney CBD, upstairs in the Dymocks Building on George Street, near Martin Place. Each of our six grooming booths has high partitions and a curtain, giving you space to have your hair cut without being on view from the street or sitting beside another guest.
For me, that privacy has a practical purpose. It helps people rest.
What our clients in Tokyo taught me about privacy
Before coming to Sydney, I managed HIROGINZA Yaesu, close to Tokyo Station. Many of our clients worked nearby. They included company leaders and professionals whose days were spent meeting people and making decisions.
One thing customers told me has stayed with me. Being close to the office was convenient, but being able to spend some private time without running into people they knew mattered too.
They did not need to travel far to get away from work. They needed somewhere nearby where they could stop being available for a while.
That changed how I thought about the appointment. Of course, the haircut had to be right. But the time in the chair mattered as well. A customer might arrive tired, have very little to say, and simply want us to take care of him. I wanted him to feel comfortable doing exactly that.
It is an experience I wanted to bring to Sydney: somewhere you can visit during a working day and have some time to yourself.
Inside our private barber in Sydney CBD

High partitions and individual curtains separate the grooming spaces.
You will find us at Suite 5, Level 1 of the Dymocks Building, 428 George Street. Our chairs are upstairs, away from the footpath. Someone walking past the building cannot look through a window and watch your appointment.
Six individual grooming booths

Your own grooming space, with a reclining chair and a shampoo basin.
Every grooming station has its own booth. High partitions separate the chairs, and a curtain closes the entrance. You can settle into your appointment without looking across at another customer.
To be clear about what we mean by private: these are curtain-fronted booths, rather than sealed rooms with doors. They offer visual privacy, but they are not soundproof.
The height of the partitions was important to us. We wanted the space to feel properly separated, including for taller guests. At the same time, we did not want the booths to feel cramped or enclosed. Privacy should help you feel at ease.
The dark finishes and soft lighting are part of that atmosphere. But the part I care most about is quite simple: once you sit down, you have your own space.
Time to settle in
The Signature Grooming Course takes approximately 45 minutes, and we reserve a one-hour appointment slot. Please allow an hour for your visit, especially the first time, when we will spend time understanding your hair and preferences.
We want enough time to consult properly, complete the service carefully and explain the finish. A quiet room is only useful if the appointment itself feels comfortable too.
Knowing when to leave the conversation alone
We have only been open in Sydney for a few days as I write this, but I have already noticed that quite a few guests seem tired when they arrive. I find myself thinking about how to help them relax, as well as how to cut their hair.
Sometimes the signs are easy to read. A guest closes his eyes and begins to settle. At that point, I do not feel the need to keep a conversation going. I let him rest and concentrate on the service.
If you enjoy talking with your barber, you are welcome to. If you would rather be quiet, that is welcome too. You can tell us, but you should not have to explain or apologise for wanting a quiet appointment.
This is part of what Japanese hospitality means to me in daily practice: noticing the person in front of you and adjusting how you look after them.
A proper consultation still comes first
Quiet service does not mean guessing what you want. Before we begin, we discuss the shape, length and finish you have in mind. We also ask about your routine: how you style your hair before work, how much time you have, and anything that is difficult to manage.
A photo is helpful if you have one. Please also tell us about any skin sensitivity before facial shaving.
I am still learning English. If a detail needs clarification, I will take the time to check it with you, using a photograph or the mirror where helpful. Getting the detail right matters more than pretending we have understood each other.

What is included in the Signature Grooming Course?
The course brings the haircut and grooming services into one appointment:
- Consultation and haircut
- Shampoo and scalp cleanse
- Hot towel
- Japanese facial shaving
- Shoulder and neck massage
- Styling
The haircut is tailored to how you want to look and how you wear your hair each day. The hot towel, shaving and massage give you time to lie back and rest during the visit.
I want guests to leave pleased with their hair and glad they took the time to come in. That is the standard I am working towards with every appointment.
A barber near Martin Place for your working day
Our George Street location is a short walk from Martin Place, making us convenient for people working in the surrounding offices and for visitors staying in the CBD.
You do not need a particular job title to appreciate a private appointment. You might spend all day speaking with clients. You might dislike having your hair cut in an open salon. Or you might simply enjoy a quiet hour once a month.
Those are all good reasons to choose a space like ours.

Frequently asked questions
Are the grooming rooms fully enclosed?
Each booth has high partitions and a curtain at the entrance, rather than a door. They are designed for visual privacy and are not soundproof rooms.
Do I have to talk during the haircut?
No. We will consult with you about your hair and check any necessary details during the service. Beyond that, you are welcome to enjoy your appointment quietly.
How long should I allow?
Please allow one hour. The Signature Grooming Course usually takes around 45 minutes, with time in the booking for your consultation and finishing details.
Is Japanese facial shaving included?
Yes. The Signature Grooming Course includes a hot towel and Japanese facial shaving, along with the haircut, shampoo, shoulder and neck massage, and styling. Tell us about any skin concerns before we begin.
Where is the salon entrance?
Enter the Dymocks Building at 428 George Street and head to Level 1, Suite 5. Our salon is inside the building, rather than a street-level shopfront.
What if my appointment is outside the building's opening hours?
Please contact us in advance so we can arrange to meet you on the ground floor and escort you to the salon.

When we were planning the salon, I wanted to create somewhere people could feel looked after without having to make an effort themselves. The private booths help us do that. What happens inside them—how carefully we listen, cut and notice when someone wants to rest—is our responsibility.
If that sounds like the kind of appointment you have been looking for, we would be happy to welcome you.
